For more than a decade every year in the first days of May on the rocks of the lake Yastrebinoye there takes a place Climbing Festival 'Climbing for everybody' - a great happening for climbers, alpinists and tourists. Thousands of climbers from St.Petersburg and neighborhood and many guests from other parts of Russia and even from abroad take part in the Festival
The Festival is held on 'Skaly' during Victory holidays in May. 'Skaly' is a short name given to granite rocks by the lakes Yastrebinoye and its environs - a pearl of Karelian land, situated 150 km from St. Petersburg. 'Skaly' are very differently-shaped, therefore climbers may train and contest on routes of various difficulty.
The Festival 'Climbing For Everybody' has been arranged by the group of Russian alpinists since 1988 as a number of several climbing competitions that make a large spectrum of human abilities to be used. That time, only the strongest sportsmen could take part in climbing competitions that were held every time at a new place. The Festival idea was to arrange the competitions at a permanent place and to make them opened to climbers of all skill levels. One of the goals of Climbing Festival is to let non-climbing people try themselves on some easy routes and watch professinal climbers at their best. It is to awake interest in climbing sports, to make climbing more popular among people. The beginners who usually train in gymhalls may enjoy real, 'natural' climbing here.
The programme of our Festival includes number of events. The main of them is Climbing Marathon that is held on some 100 routes (including speed and high-difficulty routes) according to a very simple and democratic principle "who passes more routes wins". Any comer, whether he's a professional climber or a spectator may join the Marathon. Also there are competitions of various orientations that are Kids Marathon, "The Record of Parnas" sprint climbing competition, mountainclimbing-like competition - the Dombay Roped Couples, Relay-race climbing and some non-climbing arrangements.
In many cases those who come to 'Skaly' just to watch and support participants of the Festival, become participants themselves - climbing is nice and keen that much! For last years the 'Climbing For Everybody' is getting more and more popular abroad and we are having even some organized groups from neighbouring countries.
So we are glad to launch English pages for our website and we are wating for you to contact us, leave your comments, offers and wishes at . And, of course, we will be glad to see you at 'Skaly' this year!
